Description
The Hildbrandt .38 Caliber is an excellent shader tattoo machine. Built with 8 wrap coils with long springs designed for a soft hitting shader. It shares its frame design with the slower hitting .444 Marlin. Basically if you want faster shading, go with the .38 Caliber and if you want slower, go with the .444 Marlin. 8 wrap coils with a height of 33mm, 22uf capacitor, 63WV. The weight of this piece is 230 grams/8 ounces. Measures 3.5 inches across and 3.5 inches height. Made with low carbon stainless steel that is treated with a dark metallic chrome finish. I purchased a .38 caliber and received it yesterday. This is the second Hildbrant machine I have bought. I bought a .44 magnum (I love it!) awhile back and decided to buy the .38 caliber shader. You can check out my review of the .44 in the comments concerning it. I have been a tattooist almost 35 years. I have some very nice, expensive machines. One of my friends was talking about how nice Hildbrant machines are for the low price. I spent $49 plus shipping to try out the .44. I was impressed. It is not a super deluxe anything…just a very nicely built machine! This .38 caliber, right out of the box was a nice shader! After some fine tuning to my own personal preferences–this little cutie rocks! Honestly here, the frames of very expensive machines are smoothed, polished and buffed to damn near perfection. Hildbrandt machines are just pretty. You will notice little imperfections in the cutting of the frame–so what! They are buffed, polished, and very nicely made. If you can afford a few hundred dollars for a tattoo machine–go for it! But if you are on a budget, if you are new and are looking for a nice machine(s)–don’t blow your money on ebay buying cheap garbage, try Hildbrant machines. Like I said earlier, these machines are not the equal of the super top dollar machines–but by gawd–they are nicely built machines and they are worth buying. Just telling it as I see it…that’s all I have, my opinion. I recommend these machines (at least the .44 mag. and the .38 caliber from my personal experiences so far) to anyone who wants nice machines without paying an arm and a leg for them. WTF do I know? After my almost 35 years of experience,and after my explaining that Hildbrandt machines are not super dooper turbo charged, extreme deluxe machines–just very nicely built, sturdy,smooth running machines, which I recommend for up and coming tattooists on a budget–you can accept my opinion or reject it. LOL! I just re-read what I have written. It sounds like a commercial for Hildbrant! I don’t work for them! I’m just trying to give a thumbs up for the two machines I have bought, and a heads up that Hildbrant machines are worth buying…just my opinion.

I just got the kit .44 and the .38. Wondering if you could help me out. The .44 isn’t running very well.
I run the .38 shader right outta the box and it’s fast, loud, BUT the .38 liner seems much softer hitting than supposed to. Can’t figure it out.

Is there anything special you have to do with the shader vs the .44 magnum liner. I just got my apprentice kit yesterday and the liner works fine once its all hooked up but the shader does not even run? I am new so im not sure if i must do something different then what I had done with the .44 magnum liner

I adore this machine it makes a great color packer as it hits a bit harder than the .444 I only wish you could order these custom I would have preferred a 47 uf cap on this and the .444 and 10 wrap coils I like a slower hitting machine for my shading however set up as it is you can get super clean saturation in a very short period of time

Hello Sir,
Thank you for your inquiries, i am going to answer both of your questions here. The difference between a color packer and a Shader is the front Spring. The Front Spring of a shader is a long spring, but the front spring of a color packer is a short spring. So you can use the .38 Caliber as a color packer, you simply need to purchase a short front spring for it. So the long front spring you commented on would not fit for a color packer, but the one in the link below will:

I am a shop owner and a hobby of mine is collecting tattoo machines. I have bought and used a lot of top brand machines like Welker Brand, Workhorse (Soba, Cory Rodgers, and Seth Ciferri), FK Irons, Sharpz, and few more. I must say for $50.00 these machines are nice running machines. I bought the .38 shader a few months back and I use it all the time. Great product and well worth the money.
